The United States has recently announced new sanctions on two Sudanese military factions and associated companies involved in a devastating war in Sudan. The decision to impose sanctions came after Sudan’s military withdrew from peace talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The scope and scale of the bloodshed in Khartoum and Darfur, in particular, is appalling.”
Furthermore, the State Department has imposed visa restrictions on officials associated with former dictator Omar Hassan al-Bashir, who was removed from power in 2019 after a three-decade rule. This comprehensive approach aims to address the root causes of the conflict and promote stability in Sudan.
Previously, in response to the military coup in October 2021, the United States suspended $700 million in direct assistance to Sudan’s government and halted debt relief. Similarly, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and other governments and institutions have taken measures to address the crisis. These collective actions aim to hold those responsible for the ongoing violence accountable and create conditions for lasting peace and development in Sudan.
