Jacinda Ardern, who served as New Zealand’s prime minister, has been granted the prestigious title of Dame, only four months after leaving office. Known for her compassionate and progressive approach to politics, she has become an emblem of liberal politics worldwide. This recognition, given as part of the annual tradition of honoring outstanding individuals on the King’s Birthday holiday, holds deep significance for Ardern.
Initially, Ardern contemplated declining the honor, as she believed that the challenges faced by the country over the past five years were collective achievements rather than the work of a single person. Nevertheless, she ultimately accepted the title as a token of appreciation for her family, colleagues, and the people who supported her during her time as prime minister.
Given the title of Dame Grand Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, Ardern’s contributions to the country’s response to the tragic terrorist attacks in Christchurch in 2019 and the management of the COVID-19 pandemic were instrumental in her recognition. Prime Minister Chris Hipkins praised her unwavering dedication to New Zealand, describing these events as significant challenges that the nation has confronted recently.
At the age of 42, Ardern’s decision to step down as prime minister in January surprised many. Citing exhaustion and a lack of the necessary energy reserves to fulfill the demanding role, she made the announcement nine months before the general election, while her center-left Labour Party struggled in the polls.
Despite leaving office, Ardern has continued to contribute to the New Zealand government’s efforts against online extremism and terrorism in an unpaid role. Additionally, she serves on the board of Prince William’s Earthshot environmental prize and has plans to begin two fellowships at Harvard University later this year.
With this honor, Dame Jacinda Ardern joins her immediate predecessors, Sir Bill English and Sir John Key, as a member of the Order of Merit. Meanwhile, Queen Camilla received the country’s highest honor, the Order of New Zealand, in line with the longstanding tradition. Esteemed members of this order include former prime ministers Helen Clark and Jim Bolger, among others.
